Last Saturday when we were on the beach we looked for sea glass for the first time this year. We began hunting for it years ago. We have tons of stories about hunting for sea glass. In this area we find good pieces at Alki but better ones are found at Port Townsend. Where there has been a lot of waste (glass) put into the salt water where it can tumble and smooth out are the best places. Seattle historically had many things happen where there was glass put into the bay.
Sea Glass
So what is so important about sea glass? It once was trash. Broken and sharp... unwanted. After years of being tossed around and smooth out, it is a collectable. Collectors use it for making art or jewelry. Someday on another post I will show you what I do with it. Below is a photo of some small pieces of various colors... red and blue glass are rare. Green is probably medicine bottles or soda bottles such as 7 up.
