Field Trip - Mary Olson Farm

Mary Olson Farm

Yesterday I went with Riley on his science class field trip to the Mary Olson Farm in our town.  The house was built in 1906.  The city of Auburn owns it... no one lives there.  As of in the 1980s when the last family members lived there, there wasn't electricity, running water, or a bathroom in the house.

We were there th learn about salmon.  On the farm there is a creek.where salmon spawn this time of year.  We ran ph acid in the water tests, and took the temp of the water too.  We discovered what areas in the creek they would lay their eggs.  The females lay thousands of eggs but only a few actually become a fish.  So many things can go wrong including predators such as birds.

After not eating for weeks, fighting to get back to the creek they were born, laying eggs or fertilizing the eggs... the salmon dies.  Seems so complicated.  God must have a reason or a message in this process of the salmon.  Interesting though.  Wouldn't you say?

I am going to appreciate salmon more when I have it for dinner.
